What you need to know
A Commonwealth citizen who has a grandparent who was born in the UK, could be eligible for a UK Ancestry Visa. This visa allows you to live and work in the UK for a period of up to five years, as well as exit and re-enter the UK freely on multiple occasions.
You can apply for a UK Ancestry visa if you:
- Are a Commonwealth citizen
- Are applying from outside the UK
- Are able to prove that one of your grandparents was born in the UK
- Are able and planning to work in the UK
You must also meet the eligibility requirements which include your age, financial situation and your ability to gain employment in the UK.
Ancestry can be claimed if your parents were adopted however can not be met through stepparents.
You may bring your spouse, partner and/or dependent children with you. They are allowed to stay for the same period as you and would have the right to work.
