What you need to know

The UK Fiancé(e) Visa allows non-EEA nationals to enter the UK for a period of up to 6 months to marry or form a civil partnership with their British or settled partner and begin a new life here in the UK.

The sponsor must be a British citizen, UK settled person or a person with UK refugee status.

A UK Fiancé(e)Visa is only granted for 6 months and allows you marry or form a civil partnership within this validity period. After the registration of your marriage or civil partnership has taken place, you are then required to extend your stay by making an application from within in the UK.

Before you submit your application for a UK Fiancé(e) Visa, you will need to:

  • Meet the minimum income threshold of the financial requirements.
  • Have all the specified documentation as set out by the immigration rules.

A sponsor must be capable of financially supporting their fiancé(e) and any child dependant(s) without relying on public funds. The amount you need to demonstrate must be based on the following thresholds:

  • £18,600 (fiancé(e) only)
  • £22,400 (fiancé(e) & one child/dependant)
  • £24,800 (fiancé(e) & two dependants)
  • £27,200 (fiancé(e) & three dependants)
  • £2,400 for each additional child.

Any applicant over the age of 18 will need to demonstrate their proficiency in the English language by completing the appropriate language test. You do not need to fulfil this requirement if you are a national of a majority English speaking country or have completed a degree taught in English.

As a sponsor you must also be able to provide proof of suitable accommodation for your spouse and any dependants in accordance with the Housing Act 1988.

Nationals of certain countries must show they are Tuberculosis (TB) free by obtaining a medical certificate from an approved clinic recognised by the Home Office.

There are some exceptions to these rules.
