What you need to know
Frontier workers are people who work in one country but who live primarily in another.
For the purposes of obtaining a permit, a Frontier Worker is someone who met the following criteria before 31 December 2020 and has continued to meet them since:
- They are an EEA national (including Swiss nationals)
- They are not primarily resident in the UK
And they are one of the following:
- A worker in the UK
- Self-employed in the UK
- A person who has retained the status of being self-employed/a worker under regulation 4
The Frontier Worker Permit will only be available to those who began working in the UK prior to 31st December 2020 and who continue in this working pattern until they come to apply.
From 1st July 2021, it will be mandatory for all Frontier Workers (except Irish citizens) to hold a Frontier Worker Permit in order to enter the UK.
Family members of Frontier Workers may apply for an EU Settlement Scheme Family Permit.
