What you need to know

The Start-up visa is an opportunity for an individual to establish their own business in the UK which is viable, innovative and a scalable business idea.

You must have a business plan endorsed by an approved endorsing body before you can make your application to the Home Office.

You must be endorsed by an authorised body that is either:

  • a UK higher education institution
  • a business organisation with a history of supporting UK entrepreneurs

You must be able to show that your business idea is:

  • a new idea – you cannot join in a business that is already trading
  • innovative – you must have an original business idea which is different from anything else on the market
  • viable – it has potential for growth

You do not need to be the sole founder of the business and may be a member of a Start-up team, but each member must have their own individual endorsement.

As well as providing an endorsement letter to the Home Office you will also need to meet the English Language requirement and be also able to prove that you have enough personal savings to maintain yourself in the UK.

Your spouse or partner and children can apply to join you or to stay in the UK as your ‘dependants’ if they’re eligible. If their application is successful, their visa will end on the same date as yours.

You can switch into this category if you are already in the UK however you must do this before your current visa expires. This category offers you leave for 2 years and does not lead directly to settlement in the UK.
