What you need to know
If you hold the status of a British National Overseas and normally reside in Hong Kong since 31 January 2021 you can make an application to enter or remain in the UK. BN(O) status is a form of British nationality created for people from Hong Kong so they could retain a form of British nationality after the handover in 1997.
The Hong Kong BN(O) visa is designed to enable a BN(O) status holder and their dependants to come to the UK as a family unit. If you are applying as a family unit you must apply together. If applying from within the UK, the main applicant and any family members applying at the same time must normally live in Hong Kong, the UK, Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man.
The visa allows you and your dependents to live, work, study and use the NHS Services in the UK.
As part of your application, BN(O) status holders will need to be able to show that they can support themselves and their dependents for at least 6 months when in the UK, unless the main applicant has been living in the UK with valid leave for 12 months or more. How you demonstrate you meet the financial requirements will depend on your personal circumstances and a variety of different approaches can be taken including savings, income and offer of help from friends and family amongst others.
How much you need depends on how many family members are applying with you. For example, you will need:-
- £2,000 as a single adult
- £3,100 as a couple with a child
- £4,600 as a couple with 3 children
- £9,200 as a couple with 2 parents and 2 adult children
You will also need to show that you have adequate accommodation and a valid TB test if applying from abroad.
